Flisning, also known as tiling, is the installation of tiles on floors, walls, or countertops. It creates a durable, water-resistant surface suitable for indoor spaces and various environments. The process generally includes substrate preparation, layout and planning, tile setting with adhesive, grouting, and finishing work such as cleaning and sealing.

Substrate preparation is essential. Surfaces must be sound, clean, dry, and dimensionally stable. In wet areas, a moisture barrier and a cement backer board or waterproof membrane are commonly required. Substrates may include concrete, drywall reinforced for tiling, or existing floors that are properly leveled.

Tiles come in many types, including ceramic, porcelain, natural stone, glass, and composite materials. Porcelain and ceramic tiles are common for floors and walls, while natural stone often requires sealing and maintenance to protect against staining and moisture.

Layout planning usually starts with a centerline or reference point and may use patterns such as straight lay, diagonal, brick, or herringbone. Spacers help maintain uniform joints, and tiles are cut with a tile cutter, nippers, or a wet saw to fit edges and irregular spaces.

Adhesives vary by application. Thin-set mortar is standard for floors and walls, while mastic may be used on some vertical surfaces but is not recommended in wet areas. Grouting fills the joints and can be cementitious or epoxy; sealing may be necessary for porous stones or certain grout types.

Expansion joints, proper curing times, and appropriate ventilation are important, especially for large installations. Maintenance includes regular cleaning and resealing stone surfaces as needed. Flisning is common in bathrooms, kitchens, and other living spaces, offering both function and aesthetic versatility.
