Flighttest is the process of validating an aircraft’s performance, stability, controllability, systems, and safety in actual flight, typically following extensive ground testing. It is used to verify design intent, demonstrate compliance with airworthiness standards, and support certification and production release. Flighttest programs are conducted by specialized teams that include flight test engineers, test pilots, instrumentation specialists, and technicians, under the oversight of the manufacturer and regulatory authorities.

A typical flighttest program begins with planning and risk assessment, then instrumentation installation and ground checks, followed by flight test sorties within a defined envelope. Onboard sensors collect data on airspeed, altitude, angle of attack, load factors, engine and propulsion performance, fuel flows, and structural loads, while telemetry and chase aircraft may provide real-time monitoring and safety oversight. Data analysis produces performance envelopes, handling qualities, stall characteristics, takeoff and landing performance, controllability, and reliability of systems.

Flighttest is commonly categorized into development tests for new designs or major modifications, certification tests to obtain regulatory approvals, production/acceptance tests, and durability or environmental tests that push components to extremes. Each test case is defined in a test plan with objective criteria, success or pass criteria, and abort conditions, and is executed with careful adherence to safety procedures and regulatory requirements.

Safety and regulatory compliance are central to flighttest. Programs use risk management, test pilots with specialized qualifications, chase planes for external monitoring, and strict airspace and weather controls.
