Fiskedød, a Norwegian term, translates to "fish kill" or "fish death" and refers to the widespread mortality of fish in a body of water. These events can occur in various aquatic environments, including lakes, rivers, and coastal areas, and can range in severity from localized die-offs affecting a small number of individuals to mass mortality events impacting entire populations.

The causes of fiskedød are diverse and often interconnected. Environmental factors play a significant role. Low oxygen levels, known as hypoxia, are a common culprit. This can be caused by algal blooms that consume oxygen as they decompose, excessive nutrient runoff from agriculture or wastewater, or thermal stratification in lakes where warmer surface water prevents oxygen from mixing with deeper, cooler layers. Pollution, whether from industrial discharge, agricultural chemicals, or sewage, can directly poison fish or create conditions that lead to their death. Sudden changes in water temperature, salinity, or pH can also stress fish to a fatal extent.

Biological factors can also contribute. Diseases and parasites can spread rapidly through fish populations, especially under stressful conditions. Predation, while a natural process, can sometimes be exacerbated by other environmental pressures. Invasive species can outcompete native fish for resources or introduce novel diseases.
