Finfiltrering is a filtration process designed to remove fine solids, colloids, and some microorganisms from liquids or gases, typically using filters with small pores or membranes. The term is used in Swedish and Norwegian to describe a polishing step following coarse filtration, and it often serves to improve clarity, taste, and stability of the product or water.

Filtration technologies in finfiltrering include depth filters and cartridge filters, as well as membrane processes such as microfiltration, ultrafiltration, nanofiltration, and, in some cases, reverse osmosis. Membranes provide defined pore sizes; microfiltration removes larger particles, ultrafiltration targets proteins and colloids, nanofiltration retains small organic molecules and ions, and reverse osmosis can remove dissolved salts. Systems may be designed as single-stage units or multi-stage configurations with prefilters.

Typical applications span water treatment for drinking and process water polishing, the beverage and food industries, pharmaceutical manufacturing, chemical processing, wastewater reclamation, and air filtration in clean rooms. In many cases finfiltrering follows preliminary treatments to achieve higher quality and consistency of the final product.

Operational considerations include crossflow design to minimize cake formation and fouling, pretreatment requirements, cleaning in place (CIP), backwashing, and monitoring of pressure and flow. Membrane-based finfiltrering often entails higher energy use and more extensive maintenance than bulk filtration methods.

Advantages of finfiltrering include high removal efficiency for fine particles and microorganisms, improved clarity and taste, and enhanced stability of products. Limitations involve higher capital and operating costs, membrane fouling, need for pretreatment, and management of concentrate streams.
