These capacitors are manufactured by winding layers of the dielectric and electrode films together, or by stacking them. The resulting roll or stack is then encapsulated in a protective casing, often made of plastic or epoxy. Film capacitors are renowned for their stability, reliability, and low loss characteristics, making them suitable for a wide range of applications.

Key advantages of film capacitors include their excellent self-healing properties, where a localized breakdown of the dielectric can be isolated, allowing the capacitor to continue functioning with minimal degradation. They also exhibit good temperature stability and low leakage currents. Common dielectric materials used include polyester (Mylar), polypropylene, polycarbonate, and polystyrene, each offering different performance characteristics. Film capacitors find extensive use in power electronics, audio circuits, filtering, timing applications, and resonant circuits due to their predictable behavior and longevity.
