Filmemulerings, also known as film emulation, is the process of reproducing the look of traditional photographic film using digital methods. It aims to replicate characteristics such as color response curves, contrast behavior, highlight and shadow latitude, grain structure, and halation to produce a film-like aesthetic in modern video and cinema workflows.

Origin and purpose: As digital capture and non-linear editing matured, filmmakers sought an aesthetic associated with classic film stocks. Emulation tools were developed to provide filmmakers, colorists, and restorers with scalable options to mimic specific stock types (for example Kodak or Fuji) and film-era tonality without physical film.

Techniques: Common techniques include applying look-up-tables or color transform curves, simulating film grain (often randomized), adding film-like noise, halation, bloom, and dynamic range mapping. Some workflows combine multiple passes of color grading, while others use dedicated software plugins and LUTs; sensor-specific color science can influence results.

Applications: Filmemulerings is used in feature production, documentary storytelling, archival restoration, and game or virtual production when a filmic feel is desired. It may be used to unify footage shot with different cameras to achieve a consistent look across a project.
