Fenotüpimine, also known as phenotyping, is the systematic observation and measurement of physical and biochemical traits in organisms. The term derives from the Greek words for "appearance" (pheno) and "type" (typos). Phenotyping provides critical insight into how genetic information is expressed under given environmental conditions, making it an essential complement to genotyping in genetics and breeding research.

The process involves recording observable characteristics such as morphology, development, physiology, metabolism, and disease resistance. In plants, phenotyping may assess traits like leaf size, flowering time, yield, drought tolerance, and pathogen resistance. In animals, it may focus on body composition, behavior, productivity, and health parameters. Modern phenotyping relies on high-throughput tools – imaging systems, spectroscopy, sensor networks, and automated data pipelines – allowing precise, repeated measurements across large populations.

Phenotyping data serve many purposes. In basic science it helps map genotype–phenotype relationships and uncover gene functions. In agriculture, it accelerates breeding programs by enabling marker-assisted selection and genomic selection, leading to improved crop varieties and livestock with desired traits. In medicine, phenotyping informs diagnostics, drug response profiling, and personalized treatment strategies. Moreover, large phenotypic databases support machine learning models that predict trait outcomes from genomic information.

Historically, phenotyping began with manual observations by naturalists, evolving through the advent of microscopes and later digital imaging. The current era of electronic phenotyping, integrated with omics technologies, marks a shift toward comprehensive, data-rich profiling that promises to enhance our understanding of biological complexity.
