Entries typically document what happened, when and where it occurred, who was involved, and the researcher’s observations, interpretations, and reflections. They support later analysis by providing temporal sequences, quotes, sensory details, and methodological notes about data collection.

Common types of notes include descriptive notes (what was observed), methodological notes (how data were collected, any limitations), reflexive notes (researcher’s thoughts and potential biases), and situational notes (ambient conditions, interruptions, or social dynamics). Many researchers also include sketches, maps, or references to audio or photographic materials.
