Fehérlistázás, often translated as whitelisting, is a security practice where a system or service explicitly permits access to only those items or entities that have been pre-approved. Anything not on the approved list is automatically denied. This is the opposite of blacklisting, which denies access to specific items or entities that have been explicitly prohibited. Whitelisting is generally considered a more secure approach because it operates on the principle of least privilege, meaning only known and trusted elements are allowed to interact.

In practice, whitelisting can be applied in various contexts. For email systems, a whitelist might contain email addresses or domains from which emails are always accepted. For network access, a whitelist could specify the IP addresses or devices permitted to connect to a network. In software, whitelisting can refer to allowing only specific applications to run on a computer.

The primary benefit of whitelisting is its strong security posture. By default, it blocks all unauthorized access, significantly reducing the risk of malware, phishing attempts, or unauthorized use of resources. However, whitelisting can also be more cumbersome to manage than blacklisting. It requires diligent maintenance of the approved list, as any legitimate item or entity not added to the whitelist will be blocked. This can lead to user inconvenience if the process of adding new approved items is not efficient. Despite the management overhead, the enhanced security makes whitelisting a preferred strategy in many high-security environments.
