Fasadelag refers to the exterior layer of a building’s facade, comprising the outer cladding and the systems behind it that protect the structure from weather, contribute to energy efficiency, and define the building’s appearance. The fasadelag forms the first line of defense against wind, rain, and temperature changes while helping to control moisture and air leakage.

The main components of fasadelag include exterior cladding (such as timber siding, brick, stone, metal panels, fiber cement, or composite materials), insulation, and a moisture and air barrier. In many systems, a drainage or ventilation plane is incorporated, especially in ventilated facades (rainscreen systems), to manage moisture and reduce the risk of condensation. Façade assemblies can be non-ventilated, where cladding is closely attached to the substrate, or ventilated, which creates a small gap for air flow behind the cladding.

Construction and installation involve coordinating the structural frame, attaching the cladding, and ensuring proper flashing, sealing, and joints around openings such as windows and doors. Details for movement joints, edge treatments, and connections to the interior envelope are essential to prevent moisture intrusion and thermal bridging. The choice of materials and installation method influence durability, maintenance needs, and fire safety.

Maintenance and durability are affected by exposure and climate. Regular inspections, cleaning, sealing of joints, and timely replacement of damaged panels or damp insulation help preserve performance. Poor maintenance can lead to moisture problems, rot, or reduced energy efficiency, especially in humid or freeze–thaw environments.
