Färskvattenspärlor are pearls that are formed within freshwater mussels. Unlike saltwater pearls which are typically found in oysters, freshwater mussels live in rivers, lakes, and ponds. The process of pearl formation in a freshwater mussel is similar to that in saltwater oysters. When an irritant, such as a parasite or a small piece of tissue, enters the mussel's shell, the mussel begins to secrete nacre, a lustrous substance made of calcium carbonate, around the irritant. Over time, this layer of nacre builds up, forming a pearl.
