Individuality refers to the set of characteristics that distinguish a person from others. It includes dispositions, preferences, values, beliefs, and the ways a person thinks and behaves, as well as their self-expression. Individuality develops from biology, development, experiences, and social relations, and it can change as people encounter new situations.

Internal dimensions such as temperament, personality traits, and core convictions interact with external dimensions like roles, social identities, and cultural norms. Autonomy and self-determination are often highlighted as central, but individuals also negotiate belonging to families, communities, or institutions, balancing distinctive traits with social needs.

Culturally and historically, understandings of individuality vary. Some traditions emphasize personal rights and self-fulfillment, particularly in liberal societies. Others prioritize social harmony and interdependence, tempering individual expression by group expectations. Technological, educational, and economic changes have expanded opportunities for self-presentation while shaping norms about what counts as acceptable individuality.

Expression of individuality occurs through language, appearance, work, art, and lifestyle. Legal protections for freedom of thought and expression support individuality, while discrimination, inequality, or coercive norms can constrain it.
