Regulatory and standards considerations include product- and country-specific labeling requirements, such as GS1 barcode standards, UPC/EAN codes, hazard communication labels, and nutrition or allergen information in food and cosmetics. Label materials and adhesives are chosen for durability and compatibility with surfaces and environmental conditions; sustainability concerns drive the use of recyclable materials and minimized label waste. Quality control is essential to ensure correct SKU assignment, labeling accuracy, and legibility.

Historically, labeling evolved with packaging and retail logistics, moving from manual handwriting to printed labels and then to automated systems in the late 20th century.
