It also guides behavior in specific settings such as business meetings, ceremonies, and public events. In the modern world, etiquette has expanded to digital spaces, giving rise to netiquette for online communication, email, and social media etiquette.

Cultural variation is a defining feature: there is no universal etiquette. Customs differ by country, region, and social group, and what is considered polite in one context can be seen as intrusive or rude in another. Examples include forms of greeting, the use of titles, punctuality, tipping, gift-giving, seating arrangements, and topics considered appropriate in conversation.

Etiquette is voluntary and aspirational rather than a legal requirement; it is maintained by social expectations and institutions such as schools, workplaces, and professional associations. While it can evolve with society, the core aim remains the same: to show consideration for others and to help social interactions proceed smoothly.
