Ethnografen is the definite form of the term ethnographer in several Scandinavian languages, meaning a researcher who studies cultures and social groups through immersive fieldwork and qualitative methods. An ethnografen aims to understand everyday life, beliefs, social organization, and ritual from the perspective of the people studied, rather than solely through external theories. Ethnography is used across disciplines such as anthropology, sociology, and cultural studies.

Historically, ethnography developed as a central method in anthropology in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Pioneering ethnographers argued for living among the communities they studied and for gathering detailed, contextual knowledge through participant observation and long-term fieldwork. Figures such as Bronisław Malinowski and Franz Boas emphasized cultural relativism and in-depth engagement, while later scholars like Clifford Geertz popularized the idea of thick description to convey cultural meanings.

Methods used by the ethnografen include long-term fieldwork with participant observation, in-depth interviews, life histories, and the analysis of cultural artifacts and texts. Ethnographic work produces rich, contextual descriptions that seek to capture everyday practices and the meanings people attach to them. Reflexivity—writing about the researcher’s own role and impact on the study—also plays a key part in many ethnographies.

Ethics and critique are central to contemporary ethnography. Informed consent, confidentiality, and respectful representation are core concerns, given the power dynamics inherent in fieldwork and the history of colonialism in research. Modern practice emphasizes collaboration with communities, reflexivity about bias and position, and efforts to avoid sensationalizing or misrepresenting participants.

Today the field includes digital forms of ethnography, such as netnography, which study online communities and cultures. The ethnografen may work across disciplines and settings, from traditional village life to online social spaces, often adopting participatory or community-based approaches. The core goal remains to understand social life from the perspective of those studied, producing nuanced accounts that illuminate cultural practices and social meanings.
