Researchers analyze these artifacts to identify cultural norms, practices, language, and value systems, often employing coding and thematic analysis, and sometimes supplementing with interviews or surveys to clarify interpretations.

The process typically includes formulating a research question, gaining access to communities, ethical considerations, data collection, documentation, analysis, and reporting. Researchers emphasize transparency, reflexivity, and alignment with platform terms and privacy expectations, ensuring informed consent where possible and anonymizing participants and content as needed.

History and scope: Netnography was introduced by Kozinets in the late 1990s as a methodological extension of ethnography for the internet. It has since evolved into a widely used approach in marketing and consumer research, as well as in sociology and media studies, with adaptations for different online environments and ethical contexts.

Applications and limitations: Netnography is used to study brand communities, online fandoms, user experiences, and cultural dynamics across social platforms. It offers rich qualitative insights but faces limitations, including concerns about representativeness, selection bias, platform access and terms of service, and ethical challenges related to consent and privacy.
