Etching is a process used to create intaglio images by incising a metal plate, usually copper or zinc, with a sharp tool. This process can be used for various purposes, including printmaking, decorative arts, and industrial applications. In printmaking, the incised lines hold ink, which is then transferred to paper to create a print. This method allows for a wide range of line weights and textures, offering artists significant expressive possibilities.

There are several techniques within etching. Drypoint is one of the most direct methods, where a sharp point is used to scratch lines into the plate. This creates a characteristic burr along the edge of the line, which holds ink and produces a soft, velvety tone in the print. Mezzotint is another technique that achieves tonal gradations by roughening the entire surface of the plate with a rocker tool. The roughened areas hold more ink, producing dark tones. To create lighter areas, the artist smooths out sections of the plate, allowing less ink to be held. Aquatint is a tonal technique that uses powdered resin to create areas of tone rather than lines. The resin particles create a porous surface that holds ink, and the density of the tone can be controlled by the amount of resin used and the duration of the etching bath.

Beyond printmaking, etching is employed in decorative arts for embellishing glassware, metalwork, and other materials. In industry, etching is used for creating printed circuit boards, microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), and in various manufacturing processes for shaping and refining surfaces.
