Esophagectomy is a surgical procedure to remove all or part of the esophagus, the muscular tube connecting the throat to the stomach. Recovery from an esophagectomy can be lengthy and may involve a hospital stay of several weeks. Patients often experience significant pain and may require a feeding tube initially to support nutrition. Complications can include infection, leakage at the surgical connection, or problems with digestion. Long-term, dietary modifications and lifestyle adjustments may be necessary. The goal of esophagectomy is to remove diseased tissue and restore the ability to swallow, improving the patient's quality of life and prognosis.
