Erythroforeja is a genus of parasitic mites belonging to the family Erythraeidae, commonly known as red mites or velvet mites. These tiny arachnids are found worldwide and are particularly prevalent in temperate and tropical regions. They are most active during the spring and summer months, often emerging from soil or leaf litter to feed on small invertebrates, including insects, spiders, and occasionally vertebrates such as amphibians, reptiles, and small mammals.

The name *Erythroforeja* derives from the Greek words *erythros* (red) and *phoreja* (bearer), referencing their distinctive bright red or orange coloration when fully engorged with blood. This vivid hue serves as a warning signal to potential predators, deterring them from consuming the mites. However, when not feeding, they appear pale or translucent, blending into their environment.

Erythroforeja mites undergo a complex life cycle involving multiple developmental stages: egg, larva, protonymph, deutonymph, and adult. The deutonymph stage is particularly notable as it is the only feeding stage, during which the mite attaches to a host to consume blood or other bodily fluids. This stage is also when they exhibit their characteristic red coloration. After feeding, they detach to molt into adults, which do not feed again.

While erythroforeja mites are generally not considered harmful to humans, they can cause irritation if they come into contact with skin. Their presence in large numbers may also contribute to the decline of certain invertebrate populations, affecting ecological balance.
