The expression is not standardized in the scientific literature; in many contexts similar ideas are described as inverted or reverse epithelial polarity, or as epithelial polarity inversion.

In experimental and model systems, the concept has appeared in discussions of organoids, tissue engineering, and cultured epithelia where extracellular matrix cues, mechanical forces, or genetic perturbations can lead to an apparent reorientation of apical surfaces away from the usual lumen or luminal side.
