Energiasäilmete, often translated as energy storage, refers to the process of capturing energy produced at one time for use at a later time. This is crucial for balancing the supply and demand of energy, especially with the increasing integration of renewable energy sources like solar and wind power, which are intermittent by nature. Various technologies exist for energy storage, each with its own advantages and applications.

Batteries, particularly lithium-ion batteries, are a prominent example of energy storage. They convert chemical energy into electrical energy and vice versa. Grid-scale battery systems are being deployed to stabilize electricity grids, store excess renewable energy, and provide backup power. Other electrochemical storage methods include flow batteries and sodium-sulfur batteries.

Mechanical energy storage encompasses several techniques. Pumped-storage hydroelectricity is a mature technology where water is pumped uphill to a reservoir during periods of low demand and released to generate electricity when demand is high. Compressed air energy storage (CAES) involves compressing air into underground caverns or tanks and releasing it to drive turbines. Flywheels store kinetic energy in a rotating mass.

Thermal energy storage (TES) involves storing heat or cold. This can be achieved using sensible heat (changing temperature of a material), latent heat (changing phase of a material), or thermochemical processes. TES is utilized in buildings for heating and cooling, and in industrial processes.

Hydrogen is also emerging as a significant energy storage medium. Excess electricity can be used to produce hydrogen through electrolysis, which can then be stored and later converted back into electricity via fuel cells or burned directly.
