Energiabandat is a term used in solid-state physics to describe the allowed and forbidden energy levels for electrons within a solid material. These bands are formed when the atomic orbitals of individual atoms in a crystal lattice overlap, causing their discrete energy levels to broaden into continuous bands.

The most important bands are the valence band and the conduction band. The valence band is the highest energy band that is typically filled with electrons at absolute zero temperature. These electrons are generally bound to individual atoms and are not free to move. The conduction band is the next higher energy band, and it is usually empty or partially filled at absolute zero. Electrons in the conduction band are free to move throughout the material, enabling electrical conductivity.

The energy difference between the top of the valence band and the bottom of the conduction band is called the band gap. The size of the band gap determines whether a material is a conductor, semiconductor, or insulator. In conductors, the valence and conduction bands overlap, meaning there is no band gap, and electrons can easily move. In semiconductors, the band gap is relatively small, allowing electrons to jump from the valence band to the conduction band with the input of a small amount of energy, such as heat or light. In insulators, the band gap is large, requiring a significant amount of energy to excite electrons to the conduction band, making them poor conductors of electricity.
