Endodontics is a specialized branch of dentistry focused on the study and treatment of the dental pulp and periradicular tissues. The dental pulp, located within the inner chamber of a tooth, contains nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue. Endodontic treatment, commonly known as a root canal, is primarily aimed at preserving the natural tooth by removing infected or inflamed pulp.

The most frequent reason for endodontic intervention is irreversible pulpitis, often caused by deep decay, trauma, or cracks in the tooth. When the pulp becomes inflamed or infected, it can lead to significant toothache, sensitivity to hot and cold, and swelling. Without treatment, the infection can spread to the surrounding bone, forming an abscess.

The process typically involves accessing the pulp chamber, cleaning out the infected or damaged pulp tissue, disinfecting the canals, and then filling and sealing them with a biocompatible material, usually gutta-percha. A final restoration, such as a crown, is often placed to protect the treated tooth. Endodontic therapy aims to alleviate pain, save the natural tooth, and prevent further complications. It is a predictable and effective treatment when performed by a skilled endodontist.
