Enamell is a term that can refer to several related concepts, primarily concerning coatings and the process of applying them. Most commonly, it refers to a glassy, protective coating fused to a metal substrate at high temperatures. This type of enamell is known for its durability, resistance to corrosion, and smooth, often glossy surface. It is widely used in applications such as cookware, sanitary ware (like bathtubs and sinks), appliances, and decorative items. The composition of enamell typically includes silica, fluxes, and metal oxides, which are mixed with water to form a slurry before application.

The process of enamelling involves several steps. First, the metal object is prepared, often by cleaning and etching. Then, the enamell slurry is applied, usually by dipping, spraying, or electrostatic deposition. After drying, the coated object is fired in a kiln at temperatures ranging from 700 to 900 degrees Celsius. This high heat causes the enamell to melt, flow, and fuse with the metal surface, creating a strong bond. Multiple layers of enamell may be applied and fired to achieve the desired thickness and color.

Beyond the traditional glassy enamell, the term can also be used more broadly to describe other types of coatings that impart a smooth, finished appearance, particularly in the context of paints or lacquers. In this sense, it might refer to a high-gloss finish on furniture or automotive surfaces, emphasizing the polished and uniform nature of the coating. However, the more specific definition involving fused glassy layers on metal remains the primary understanding of the term enamell.
