Etymology and taxonomy vary by tradition. The name emberes is derived from the word ember, with a plural ending that appears in several fantasy languages and modern fiction. Across sources the classification is informal, with emberes often grouped with other fire spirits or elemental beings rather than as a defined biological category.

Biology and life cycle are treated inconsistently in different depictions. Some portrayals describe emberes as living currents of flame that can merge or split, while others present them as sentient phenomena bound to a hearth or geothermal source. They are commonly said to drift or flicker in response to wind, and to fade when deprived of heat, only to reappear when conditions warm again.
