Electricflutes can range from simple breath-driven MIDI wind controllers to fully integrated instruments with built-in sound engines and speakers.

Most electricflutes use breath pressure and fingering information to determine pitch and articulation. Common implementations include optical or capacitive finger sensors, pressure sensors on the breath stream, and switches. The sensor data is converted by onboard processors or external modules into MIDI or other digital signals, which are sent to a sound source such as a synthesizer, sampler, or computer.
