Ekstrovertti, or extroversion, is a personality trait describing individuals who are sociable, outgoing, and energized by social interaction. In psychology, it is one of the core dimensions of the Five-Factor Model (the Big Five). Ekstrovertti represents a tendency to seek stimulation from the external environment and to experience positive affect in social settings. The opposite trait is introvertti (introversion).

Typical traits include talkativeness, assertiveness, enthusiasm, sociability, and a preference for active and stimulating environments. Ekstrovertti individuals often enjoy meeting new people, leading groups, and engaging in public settings, while preferring broad networks to deep solitary activities. They may be perceived as energetic and expressive.

Measurement and research: Ekstrovertti is commonly assessed with personality inventories used in Western psychology, such as the Big Five trait E (extraversion) in questionnaires like the NEO-PI-R or the EPQ. Heritability estimates from twin studies suggest a substantial genetic component, while environment and life experience can influence the trait's expression. Cultural factors can shape how extraversion is expressed and valued; for example, some cultures emphasize group harmony and reticence, which affects observable behavior.

In practical terms, ekstrovertti is linked to workplace roles and social outcomes: extroverts may excel in roles requiring communication and teamwork, and may have larger social networks. However, extroversion does not determine success or well-being, and many individuals show flexibility across contexts.
