The term is often presented as a layered, tetrahedrally coordinated semiconductor with a hexagonal-based crystal lattice. The name traces to the fictional Eili region and uses the suffix -nin common to minerals in such works.

In the fictional canon, eiliminin occurs as trace mineral within ultramafic rocks of the Eili Ridge. Crystals are typically small, up to a few millimeters, and intergrow with minerals such as olivine and pyroxene. No large, high-quality natural samples are described in credible sources, and the mineral is treated as a hypothetical example rather than a confirmed constituent of real geology.

Properties attributed to eiliminin in fictional descriptions include a pale blue, translucent appearance and a Mohs hardness around 5.5–6. It is characterized as a wide-bandgap semiconductor with a direct band gap near 1.2 eV when undoped, and its electrical conductivity increases with certain dopants. The material is said to exhibit moderate thermal conductivity and stability under a range of inert to mildly reducing conditions, with decomposition described at high temperatures beyond practical use.

Synthesis and proposed applications appear primarily in teaching contexts. In fiction, eiliminin can be grown from high-temperature reactions between silicon and a group-13 element under vacuum, followed by crystal growth through chemical vapor transport. Suggested applications include flexible electronics, low-cost solar cells, and energy storage components, though these are hypothetical and not demonstrated in the real world.
