Eiergebonden, or egg binding, is a medical condition primarily affecting female birds in which an egg becomes stuck in the oviduct and cannot be laid. It is a potentially life-threatening emergency that requires prompt veterinary assessment and treatment.

Causes and risk factors include large or misshapen eggs, soft-shelled eggs, calcium deficiency, dehydration, obesity, hormonal imbalances, poor nutrition, limited exercise, and stress. Older birds and certain breeds appear more susceptible. Environmental factors such as inadequate nesting opportunities and irregular light cycles can also contribute.

Symptoms include straining or tail pumping, abdominal swelling, lethargy, reduced appetite, decreased vocalization, lying on the back or side, regurgitation, or the presence of an egg at the vent or visible on palpation of the abdomen. Changes in behavior or posture can indicate distress.

Diagnosis is based on history and physical examination, supported by imaging studies such as radiographs or ultrasound to locate the egg and assess the tract. Cloacal examination and blood tests may be used to evaluate dehydration, infection, or electrolyte imbalances.

Treatment depends on the severity and location of the egg. It may involve stabilization with fluids, warmth, and analgesia; calcium administration to stimulate contractions; lubrication and gentle manipulation if safe. In many cases, surgical removal of the egg or the affected oviduct is required. Prognosis worsens with delayed treatment or complications such as egg rupture and peritonitis.

Prevention focuses on adequate nutrition and calcium intake, access to clean water, proper housing with nesting opportunities, regular exercise, and stress reduction. Early recognition and routine veterinary checkups improve outcomes.
