EdgeLighting is a term used to describe lighting effects that occur along the edges of a device’s display or other surfaces. The notion encompasses both hardware lighting systems designed into displays and software-driven visual cues that illuminate the screen edges to convey information or enhance design.

In hardware terms, edge lighting refers to edge-lit LED backlighting used in many modern displays. LEDs are placed along the perimeter of the display and light is distributed through a light guide plate to illuminate the screen edges. This approach enables thinner panels and lower manufacturing costs, but can introduce challenges such as nonuniform brightness near corners or color shifts if the light guide and diffusion layers are not carefully engineered.

In software terms, edge lighting often describes notification or interaction effects that illuminate the edges of a screen. On smartphones and tablets, incoming calls, messages, or alerts may be represented by a colored glow, pulse, or sweep along the edge of the display. These effects are typically configurable by users or device manufacturers and may serve to attract attention without covering the entire screen.

Design considerations for edge lighting include the balance between visibility and power consumption, potential glare in dark environments, and accessibility concerns such as ensuring that edge cues remain legible for users with visual impairments.
