Dörrramar (door frames) are the structural surrounds that define and support doorways in buildings. They anchor the door leaf, help align opening clearance, and distribute loads around the opening. In most buildings, a door frame is installed as part of a wall construction or as a prehung unit that includes the frame with hinges and often the door leaf.

A typical door frame consists of jambs (the vertical sides), a head (the horizontal top piece), and a sill or threshold at the bottom. Finishing elements such as casing or trim may be attached to hide rough openings and provide a decorative edge. In exterior doors, weatherstripping integrated into or mounted on the frame helps seal against drafts.

Materials vary: timber frames are common in residential construction, using softwood or hardwood; engineered wood products provide stability. Metal frames, including steel or aluminum, are used for security doors or industrial applications. PVC-u and fiberglass frames offer moisture resistance and low maintenance, especially in damp or exterior environments.

Installation requires accurate sizing: the opening must be plumb and square, and the frame must be anchored to studs or masonry to resist movement. Many frames are installed as prehung units with hinges attached and a compatible door leaf. Fire-rated or acoustically rated frames are used where code requirements specify.

Maintenance involves keeping joints sealed, repainting or refinishing as needed, and replacing weatherstripping to preserve energy efficiency. Common issues include warping, swelling from moisture, or settlement causing misalignment.
