One common approach is energy dissipation. This involves converting vibrational energy into another form, typically heat, through materials with inherent damping properties. Viscoelastic materials, for instance, exhibit both viscous and elastic characteristics, allowing them to absorb and dissipate energy when subjected to stress. Another technique is friction damping, where relative motion between surfaces is intentionally introduced, and the resulting friction converts kinetic energy into heat.

Another category of damping methods involves inertia or mass. Adding mass to a vibrating structure can alter its natural frequencies, potentially shifting them away from excitation frequencies. Inertial dampers, also known as dynamic vibration absorbers, consist of a secondary mass-spring system tuned to resonate at the frequency of the unwanted vibration. When the main system vibrates, the absorber oscillates out of phase, counteracting the motion and reducing the overall vibration.

Resonance avoidance is also a form of damping. By designing a system to avoid operating at its natural frequencies, resonance and its associated large amplitude vibrations can be prevented. This is often achieved through careful selection of material properties and structural geometry.

Finally, active damping systems employ sensors, actuators, and control algorithms to actively counteract vibrations. Sensors detect the vibration, and the controller generates signals that command actuators to apply forces in the opposite direction of the vibration, effectively canceling it out. These systems are often more complex but can achieve very high levels of damping.
