Drapen is a term used in fashion and textile arts to describe the technique of arranging fabric around a form to create folds, volume, and contours. While "drape" is common in English, drapen appears in some design communities as a loanword or translation from Dutch, where drapen (to drape) conveys the same action. In practice, drapen covers both the act of shaping fabric on a dress form or body and the resulting surface or silhouette.

The concept draws on classical drapery in ancient sculpture and is central to couture and costume design. Designers such as Madeleine Vionnet popularized draping on the bias to achieve fluid silhouettes, enabling fabrics to fall with natural gravity.

Techniques involve positioning fabric on a form, pinning and tacking, and using steam or light pressing to guide the drape. Weight, fiber content, weave structure, and grain direction influence how a fabric falls. Common approaches include bias drape, layered folds, and gathered or pleated configurations. Prototyping often starts with muslin or calico on a dress form before cutting final material.

Materials used range from lightweight silks and chiffons to heavier textiles like wool crepe or velvet; fabric choice affects stability, transparency, and how the drape reads in movement. Tools include pins, dressmaker’s forms or mannequins, measuring tapes, and steam irons or pressing equipment.

Draping remains a foundational technique in fashion education, theater costume, and interior textiles, where draped fabrics create volume, softness, and dynamic lines. It contrasts with flat pattern drafting and is often combined with ongoing draping to refine fit and silhouette.
