Key components include makeup design, often featuring heavy contour and highlight, false eyelashes, and bold lips; wardrobe choices ranging from glamorous gowns to campy costumes; hair styling such as wigs or prosthetic enhancements; and performance techniques including lip-sync, live singing, comedy, or dramatic storytelling. Performers frequently develop distinctive silhouettes, color schemes, and prop aesthetics to create recognition across venues and media.

Drag style also reflects subcultural influences, including ballroom, club, and theatre traditions, as well as contemporary fashion. Some producers and performers pursue glamour and sophistication, others embrace humor or surrealist, avant-garde, or political aims. The genre allows for experimental crossovers with cosplay, performance art, and fashion.

Historically, drag has roots in theatre, vaudeville, and ballroom culture, with increased visibility in nightclubs in the 20th century and a major surge of mainstream attention following reality television and online platforms in the 2000s. Today, drag style continues to evolve as performers experiment with gender expression, technology, and audience interaction, contributing to broader conversations about identity and performance.
