Downtempo is a broad umbrella within electronic music characterized by slow to moderate tempos, emphasizing mood, atmosphere, and texture over high-energy rhythm. Beats are often understated and can be trip-hop–influenced or laid-back, and tracks frequently feature warm synth pads, jazzy chords, subtle basslines, and sampled or live instrumentation. The tempo range is typically around 60 to 100 BPM. Downtempo music can be instrumental or feature vocals, and it frequently blends elements from jazz, funk, ambient, world music, and electronica.

The style emerged in the 1990s in Europe, especially the United Kingdom, as part of chill-out and lounge scenes and in parallel with the Bristol-based trip-hop movement. It developed as a more reflective, non-dancefloor counterpart to club-focused genres, crossing over with ambient and experimental electronic styles. The term downtempo is sometimes used interchangeably with chillout or lounge, though it remains a catch-all label for music intended for relaxed listening.

Prominent artists associated with downtempo include Bonobo, Zero 7, Nightmares on Wax, Thievery Corporation, Morcheeba, Portishead, Massive Attack, Air, and Boards of Canada. The sound has diversified to incorporate global influences, from African and Asian rhythms to Latin and Middle Eastern textures, producing a wide range of moods from tranquil to melancholic. Downtempo remains a persistent presence in film scores, cafés, and late-night playlists, and it continues to evolve through contemporary electronic producers who emphasize texture and mood over tempo.
