In academic and professional usage it describes tools, languages, models, or approaches tailored to a particular problem domain rather than designed for broad, general purpose use. The term is commonly attached to nouns such as Sprache (language), Software, Modell (model), or Wissen (knowledge) to indicate a close alignment with the needs of a specific field.

In software engineering, domain-specific solutions aim to raise expressiveness and productivity within a defined domain by providing abstractions, syntax, and tooling that mirror domain concepts. This contrasts with general-purpose approaches that prioritize broad applicability. Domain-specific languages (DSLs) are a central example: they enable concise and accurate expression of domain tasks, often improving correctness and maintainability for that domain.

There are external DSLs, which are standalone languages like SQL for database queries or HTML for document structure, and internal (embedded) DSLs, which are built within a general-purpose language using its syntax and semantics. Other examples include CSS for styling web pages, Terraform's configuration language (HCL) for infrastructure as code, and various modeling languages used in engineering.
