Discretes, in electrical engineering, refer to discrete components—individual devices with fixed electrical characteristics used to build circuits. They are contrasted with integrated circuits, which realize multiple functions within a single chip. Discretes encompass both passive elements such as resistors, capacitors, inductors, and transformers, and active devices such as diodes, transistors, thyristors, and optoelectronic components.

Discretes come in a variety of form factors. Common packages include through-hole types like axial and radial resistors and capacitors, and mechanical styles such as TO-92 or TO-220 transistors and rectifiers. Surface-mount versions are widely used today, including SMD resistors and chip capacitors, along with small-signal diodes and transistors in SOT-23 or similar packages. Active discretes enable amplification, switching, and rectification, while passive discretes provide fixed impedance or energy storage.

Design and specification considerations include fixed functional roles, tolerances, and environmental limits. Resistors and capacitors often follow standard value series and tolerance codes, while inductors and transformers specify inductance, coupling, and saturation characteristics. Power ratings, voltage and current handling, temperature coefficients, and parasitics (stray capacitance and inductance) are important in circuit performance. Discretes are chosen for high-voltage or high-power applications, simple or highly controllable behavior, and ease of replacement or repair.

Applications and relevance vary. Discretes are still essential in power electronics, analog signal paths, RF front ends, and prototyping or repair work, where modular testing and fault isolation are advantageous. While integrated circuits reduce component counts, discretes remain a foundational element of electronics, offering flexibility and direct control over individual electrical responses.
