A dirtbike is a motorcycle designed for off-road riding on dirt, mud, and uneven terrain. It emphasizes lightweight construction, long-travel suspension, high ground clearance, and knobby tires. Most are built to withstand rough conditions and are optimized for off-road traction rather than pavement performance. Many models are not street-legal unless they are categorized as dual-sport or enduro bikes.

Powertrains vary, with two-stroke and four-stroke engines common. Engines are typically air-cooled or liquid-cooled and paired with manual transmissions, usually five or six gears, and a clutch. Frames are commonly steel or aluminum, and suspension systems feature telescopic front forks and a rear shock with substantial travel to absorb rough terrain. Wheels are lightweight with thick, knobby tires.

Within off-road riding, dirtbikes are often classified as motocross bikes for short-track competition, enduro or all-terrain bikes for longer rides and mixed surfaces, and trail or trials bikes for lighter, technical riding. Electric dirtbikes are increasingly available, offering different torque delivery and reduced noise.

Maintenance emphasizes air filters, oil (for liquid-cooled versions), chain checks, brake pads, tires, and suspension settings. Protective gear—helmet, goggles, boots, and body protection—is essential. Dirtbikes have their commercial origins in the mid-20th century with manufacturers such as Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki, and Kawasaki, and remain popular for sport, recreation, and professional competition.
