Dioxincontaining is an adjective used to describe substances, materials, or waste streams that contain dioxins or dioxin-like compounds at detectable or regulated levels. Dioxins refer to a group of chemically related polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs), together with certain dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). These compounds are persistent organic pollutants: they resist environmental breakdown, bioaccumulate in the food chain, and can remain in soils, sediments, and other environments for many years.

Common sources of dioxincontaining materials include combustion processes (such as waste incineration, metal recycling, and biomass burning), chlorine-bleached pulps, certain chemical manufacturing, and some contaminated soils or ashes. Dioxins can enter the human body mainly through diet, particularly fatty animal products, but inhalation of contaminated air and ingestion of soil or dust are also possible exposure routes.

Health and environmental concerns: dioxins are associated with cancer risk and adverse effects on the immune, reproductive, and endocrine systems in humans, as well as toxicity in wildlife. Because of their persistence and lipid solubility, they accumulate in adipose tissue and magnify up the food chain.

Regulatory and management aspects: many countries regulate dioxin-containing materials as hazardous waste and regulate ambient exposure using toxic equivalency (TEQ) and strict emission controls. Internationally, the Stockholm Convention aims to eliminate or reduce releases of dioxins and related compounds. Detection relies on sensitive analytical methods such as HRGC/HRMS to quantify dioxin TEQs.
