Scope and content: Dienstdata typically includes configuration details (version, endpoints, dependencies), runtime metrics and health indicators, logs and event metadata, deployment and change history, ownership and contact information, service level expectations, and security and compliance attributes. It may also include inventory information from a configuration management database (CMDB) or asset management system, as well as observability data such as traces and metrics.

Usage and purpose: IT operations, DevOps, and site reliability engineering rely on dienstdata to provision, monitor, and troubleshoot services, perform capacity planning, conduct incident analysis, and ensure compliance with policies. It aids root cause analysis when incidents occur and supports change management and audits.

Data characteristics and governance: Dienstdata may be time-stamped and stored in time-series or document stores. Data quality, access controls, retention, privacy, and data lifecycle management are important considerations, especially when service data include sensitive information about customers or internal systems.

Interoperability and challenges: There is no universal standard for dienstdata; organizations often implement their own schemas or reuse ITSM and CMDB formats. Common formats include JSON or YAML, with integration to monitoring, logging, and configuration tools. Challenges include data silos, duplication, and keeping data up to date across systems.
