Determinism is a philosophical concept that posits all events, including human cognition, decision-making, and action, are causally determined by an unbroken chain of prior occurrences. This means that given a specific set of initial conditions, only one outcome is possible. In a deterministic universe, the future is as fixed as the past, and free will, in the sense of being able to choose differently in precisely the same circumstances, is an illusion.

There are several forms of determinism. Causal determinism is the most common, suggesting that every event is necessitated by antecedent events and conditions together with the laws of nature. Theological determinism argues that God has predetermined all events. Logical determinism asserts that all propositions about the future are either true or false, thus fixing the future. Biological determinism emphasizes the role of genetic and physiological factors in shaping behavior.

The implications of determinism are far-reaching, particularly concerning morality, responsibility, and justice. If actions are predetermined, can individuals be held accountable for them? If a person's choices are inevitable consequences of prior causes, is punishment or praise justified? These questions have been debated for centuries, with various philosophical schools offering differing perspectives. Compatibilists, for instance, argue that free will and determinism can coexist, often by redefining free will as acting according to one's desires, even if those desires are themselves determined. In contrast, incompatibilists maintain that genuine free will requires the absence of determinism.
