Detachés, or battement détaché, is a fundamental movement in classical ballet characterized by a clean, detached separation of the working leg from the supporting leg. The working leg is raised from a closed position, extended with a pointed foot, and moves away from the body in a smooth, controlled line before returning to the starting position. The movement is not a large beating action; rather, it emphasizes a precise, separate gesture of the leg.

Execution typically begins in a demi-plié position with turnout. From there, the dancer lifts the working leg to a straight line, either en dehors (outward) or en dedans (inward), and reaches to a chosen distance, often in front, to the side, or to the back. The knee remains straight, the foot is fully pointed, and the leg is held briefly in extension before closing back to the original position, usually fifth. The tempo should be controlled and the transition between positions should feel seamless.

Variations include the degree of turnout, height of the leg, and the direction of the extension. In beginner work, detachés are usually lighter and lower; in advanced training, they may reach higher extensions while maintaining a clean line. Détaché is commonly used to improve control, articulation of the foot, and preparation for more complex steps such as grand battement or pirouette sequences.
