Dermatitisz is a term occasionally used to describe inflammatory conditions of the skin characterized by redness, itching, swelling, and sometimes blisters. It is not a widely recognized medical diagnosis in standard dermatology literature, and the term is sometimes encountered in fictional works or as a misspelling of dermatitis. When used, it often refers to a spectrum of dermatitis conditions rather than a single disease entity.

Most commonly, dermatitis refers to conditions such as atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, seborrheic dermatitis, and irritant dermatitis. Common triggers include irritants (soaps, detergents, solvents), allergens (nickel, fragrances, preservatives), environmental factors (heat, humidity), and genetic predisposition. Barrier dysfunction and immune system dysregulation contribute to ongoing inflammation.

Clinical features vary by type but generally include pruritus, erythema, edema, and vesiculation or crusting in affected areas. Distribution depends on exposure: flexural areas for atopic dermatitis, hands and face for contact dermatitis, scalp for seborrheic dermatitis. Diagnosis is usually clinical, supported by history and examination; patch testing can identify contact allergens; infections and other skin diseases may be ruled out by laboratory tests or biopsy if needed.

Management focuses on symptom relief and trigger avoidance. Regular emollient use maintains the skin barrier; topical corticosteroids remain first-line for inflammation, with non-steroidal options (calcineurin inhibitors) for sensitive areas. Antihistamines may help itch. Infected lesions require antibiotics. Severe or widespread disease may require phototherapy or systemic therapy; addressing comorbid conditions improves outcomes.

Prognosis is variable and often chronic with relapses. Education on skin care, trigger avoidance, and early treatment improves control and quality of life.
