Demarkatsioon (from the Estonian words *de-* and *mark-* meaning "to mark out") refers to the process of establishing and delineating the boundaries of a geographic area, typically a country or administrative region. This concept is closely related to the establishment of national sovereignty and territorial integrity, particularly in the context of state formation and international relations.

In the context of Estonia, demarkation gained prominence during the 20th century, especially following the country’s independence in 1918. The newly formed state needed to define its borders clearly to assert its sovereignty and prevent disputes with neighboring powers. The Treaty of Tartu (1920), signed between Estonia and Soviet Russia, played a crucial role in formally establishing Estonia’s western and southern borders, including the demarcation of the Gulf of Finland and the Narva River.

Demarkation involves both physical and legal aspects. Physically, it includes the placement of boundary markers, such as stones, fences, or signs, along the agreed-upon lines.
