Delta front is the seaward edge of a river delta, the zone where deltaic deposits meet the open water body such as a sea or lake. It is the distal part of the delta that lies between the delta plain and the offshore environment, often submerged and exposed to wave and tidal processes. The delta front forms as sediment-laden flows from distributary channels spill into relatively deeper water, creating inclined beds and subaqueous facies that dip toward the basin.

The sedimentary architecture of the delta front commonly includes channel belts, mouth bars, and adjacent sand-rich facies, overlain by finer sands and muds offshore. In cross-section these deposits can appear as submarine clinoforms or foresets, reflecting progradation of the delta into deeper water. The front evolves with changes in sediment supply and relative sea level: rapid progradation tends to build a broad, steep-fronted margin, while higher sea level or reduced supply can lead to reworking, backstepping, or bypass of sediments.

In geological and petroleum contexts, the delta front is a key depositional environment. Its sand-rich intervals often host hydrocarbon reservoirs, whereas the surrounding mud-rich prodelta and other deltaic facies influence permeability, trapping, and seal characteristics. Delta-front deposits are used to interpret paleoenvironments, sediment supply, and sea-level histories, and they are found in many major deltas worldwide, including those of the Mississippi, Nile, and Ganges-Brahmaputra systems.
