Defibrilloittorit are medical devices used to treat life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias, specifically ventricular fibrillation and pulseless ventricular tachycardia. These arrhythmias cause the heart to beat chaotically and ineffectively, preventing it from pumping blood. A defibrillator delivers an electrical shock to the heart, aiming to reset its electrical activity and restore a normal rhythm.

There are two main types of defibrillators: external and internal. External defibrillators are commonly found in public places like airports, shopping malls, and sports arenas, often as Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs). AEDs are designed for use by laypeople and provide voice prompts to guide the user through the process. Manual external defibrillators require trained medical professionals to interpret the patient's heart rhythm and decide when and how to deliver the shock.

Internal defibrillators, known as Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillators (ICDs), are surgically implanted within the patient's chest. These devices continuously monitor the heart rhythm and automatically deliver a shock if a dangerous arrhythmia is detected. ICDs are typically used for individuals at high risk of sudden cardiac arrest.

The electrical shock from a defibrillator is delivered through electrodes placed on the chest. The energy level of the shock is determined by the type of defibrillator and the specific condition being treated. Defibrillation is a critical intervention in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and significantly improves the chances of survival for individuals experiencing sudden cardiac arrest.
