Deepshaft is a term used in mining and underground construction to describe a deep vertical or near-vertical excavation that provides access to subsurface deposits, cavities, or tunnel networks. It typically extends from the surface to ore bodies or other targets and is used for hoisting, ventilation, and service access. A deepshaft generally comprises a shaft collar, shaft lining, and a bottom where equipment such as cages or skips is deployed. Above the shaft, support structures such as a headframe or winding tower accommodate hoisting machinery and safety supports. The shaft is designed to allow controlled ingress and egress of personnel and materials, and it often includes a separate ventilation duct or integrated ventilation airways to maintain air quality.

Construction and operation: Shaft sinking begins at surface and proceeds downward while managing groundwater, rock stability, and health and safety requirements. Common methods include conventional shaft sinking with temporary support, and modern techniques such as raise boring or shaft drilling rigs for pilot holes. Once excavated, the shaft is lined with concrete or steel to reduce rock fall and water ingress. During operation, the shaft enables ore transport, backfill, service access, and ventilation; water inflow is managed by pumping and sump systems. Emergency plans typically include multiple escape routes and refuge stations.

Applications and history: Deepshafts are a standard feature in many underground mines, particularly for deep ore bodies and large-scale mineral production. Advances in lining materials, hoisting technology, and safety systems have influenced shaft design and operation.
