Daugiasluoksniams is a Lithuanian term used in materials science to describe structures or components that are made up of several layers of different materials. A multilayer system combines distinct layers to achieve properties that are difficult to obtain with a single material, such as enhanced mechanical strength, improved barrier performance, tailored optical or electrical behavior, or better thermal management.

In a typical multilayer, each layer provides a specific function. Common roles include protection, adhesion, barrier against diffusion, electrical conductivity, optical reflection or transmission, and thermal insulation. The performance of the whole stack depends on the choice of materials, the thickness of each layer, and the quality of the interfaces between layers. Layer thicknesses can range from a few nanometres to tens of micrometres, and the total number of layers can vary from a handful to hundreds.

Manufacturing methods for multilayer systems include lamination, various deposition techniques such as physical vapor deposition, chemical vapor deposition, sputtering, atomic layer deposition, and roll-to-roll processes. Material compatibility and control of interfacial stresses are important considerations in design and production.

Applications of multilayer structures are broad. They appear in protective and cutting-tool coatings, dielectric stacks in electronics and optics, laminated glass and packaging films with advanced barrier properties, and thin-film solar cells and sensors. In packaging, multishell or multilayer films improve shelf life by reducing gas and moisture permeability. In optics, dielectric mirrors and anti-reflective coatings rely on precisely engineered layer sequences.

Challenges include ensuring durable adhesion between dissimilar materials, managing thermal expansion mismatches, preventing diffusion or interlayer reactions, and controlling production costs.
