Traditionally cut crystal is made from lead glass, typically containing around 24-32% lead oxide, which enhances refractive brilliance. After blowing or pressing the blank, skilled artisans cut the surface with diamond-tipped wheels to form intricate patterns, ranging from simple facets to elaborate, repeated motifs. The cut surfaces are then polished to a high finish. Bohemia (now the Czech Republic) and England were early centers, with later influence from Ireland, France, and Germany. Iconic producers include Waterford, Baccarat, and Moser, among others. The terminology distinguishes full-cut crystal, where most or all surfaces are faceted, from pattern-cut or engraved crystal, which features specific decorative motifs.

Contemporary considerations: In modern markets, “crystal” may indicate lead glass or lead-free formulations. Lead content affects sparkle, weight, and regulatory labeling, and some consumers prefer lead-free crystal for health or care reasons. Care guidance generally recommends hand washing to preserve facets and avoid dishwasher damage; prolonged contact with acidic liquids can affect some formulations.
