This snake is characterized by its stout body, triangular head, and a distinct pattern of dark bands or blotches on a lighter background, which can vary in color from yellowish to brown or gray. The pattern often includes a dark stripe running from the eye to the corner of the mouth.

Cuntils are primarily nocturnal and inhabit a range of environments, including forests, grasslands, and near water sources. They are adept climbers and swimmers. Their diet consists mainly of small mammals, birds, amphibians, and other reptiles. The venom of the cuntil is hemotoxic, meaning it affects the blood and tissues, causing pain, swelling, and potentially tissue damage. While bites can be serious and require prompt medical attention, they are rarely fatal if treated appropriately.

These snakes are known for their defensive behavior, which can include coiling their body and vibrating their tail, producing a rattling sound that mimics rattlesnakes. They are generally not aggressive unless provoked or cornered. Conservation statuses vary across its range, with some populations facing threats from habitat loss and human encroachment.
